Ontario Pours Some Money on Sleemans

Ontario is partnering with Sleeman Breweries Ltd. to help the company create 15 new jobs and retain 412 existing positions in Guelph.

Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Minister Responsible for Small Business, and Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph, made the announcement today at Sleeman Breweries in Guelph.

Sleeman Breweries Ltd. is Canada's third largest brewing operation and is one of Ontario's original craft brewers. More than twenty different brands are brewed year-round in Guelph, including the Sleeman brand family of premium lagers and ales.

With support from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, the company is investing in expanding its packaging capabilities and is investing in equipment upgrades and new beer tanks. This investment will enable the company to brew and package beer that's currently produced by a contractor in the U.S. It will also allow the company to implement innovative can packaging technology and to produce 710ml aluminum cans of select brands for the Canadian market.

Supporting business investment in southwest Ontario is part of Ontario's plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.
