“Ding dong

I know you can hear me

Open up the door

I only want to play a little”

Your heart threatened to leap out of your chest. No matter how many times Zack forced you to play this sickening game of cat and mouse with him, you could never get used to the fear that followed with it. At any given moment, he could easily choose to cease your psychological torture and take your life instead. You were never safe in the presence of this twisted man who longed for nothing more than your never-ending suffering.

“Ding dong

You can’t keep me waiting

It’s already too late

For you to try and run away”

You kept your back plastered to the wall behind you as you hid inside one of the many buildings on Zack’s floor. You heard footsteps quickly approaching from outside along with maniacal laughter that sent shivers down your spine. You clapped your hand over your mouth, desperately trying to suppress your heavy breaths.

You couldn’t let him catch you this quickly, you couldn’t let him catch you…

“I see you, [name],” he called menacingly, temporarily paralyzing your body.

“I see you through the window

Our eyes are locked together

I can sense your horror

Though I’d like to see it closer”

Your heart skipped a beat the moment you locked eyes with his malicious, red hues through the cracked window. A devilish smirk rested his face, no doubt relishing in the fear practically emanating from you. It wasn’t until he raised his blood scythe into view that you gained the courage once again to run.

You quickly scrambled towards the back exit before bursting out through the rusty door and taking a hard right. There was no map of this floor and even after weeks of being subjected to playing this cruel game of hide and seek, you still had failed to memorize the exact layout.

It was a giant maze that you were running blindly into.

“Ding dong

Here I come to find you

Hurry up and run

Let’s play a little game and have fun”

His footsteps were heard closely behind you the whole time you ran. You knew all too well that he could easily catch up to you if he really wanted to, but the chase was far more fun for him. He was the predator hunting down his prey; he was at the very top of the food chain which was where he wanted to stay.

“You’re gonna have to run faster than!” he laughed from an alarmingly close distance to you.

Suppressing the urge to cry out, you somehow managed to fasten your pace. Your legs like jello and you feared they would give out at any moment, but you kept running. It wasn’t until his footsteps slowly started to fade that you allowed yourself to take a break once you turned the next corner.

“Ding dong

Where is it you’ve gone to?

Do you think you’ve won?

Our game of hide and see has just begun”

“I know you’re close by,” he called, the sheer amount of excitement in his voice sickening you.

The moment you stopped running, you collapsed onto the cold cement. Your legs had gone numb and your throat burned in agony, desperate for water though there was none around. You bit your fist and silently sobbed to yourself, unable to help wondering when, or if, this game would ever end.

It was only when you once again heard his footsteps rapidly approaching you that you forced yourself to get up and start running despite the excruciating pain you felt.

“I hear your footsteps

Thumping loudly through the hallways

I can hear your sharp breaths

You’re not very good at hiding”

Your pace was much slower than before. Adrenaline could only hold off the exhaustion for so long. You kept stumbling into the wall each time you turned a corner, your hands gripping tightly onto the brick in hopes that it could continue to support you.

Luck must’ve been on your side when Zack’s loud footsteps began to grow quieter and quieter. He must’ve taken a wrong turn which led him farther and farther away from you. Knowing that this would be your only chance to find another safe place to hide, you stumbled into the nearest building and collapsed onto the carpeted floor.

It appeared to once be a bedroom belonging to a little girl. Plush carpeting lined the floor and faded pink wallpaper was cracked and peeling from the walls. Various toys and stuffed animals were littered around, the majority of them lying on the bed. In the corner of the room, there was a closet; a closet just large enough for you to hide in.

“Just wait, you can’t hide from me (I’m coming)

Just wait, you can’t hide from me (I’m coming)

Just wait, you can’t hide from me (I’m coming)

Just wait, you can’t hide from me”

Ignoring your overwhelming exhaustion, you scrambled to your feet and quickly made your way towards the closet, knowing that Zack would find you soon. You could’ve sworn you heard footsteps rapidly approaching the building, but you weren’t sure if it was truly him or just your imagination tormenting you.

Either way, you weren’t about to take any chances. You dove into the closet and quietly closed the door behind you. There weren’t many contents inside the closet that could provide an effective cover for you if he stumbled across the closet. The moment that door opened, you would be fully exposed with nowhere to run.

You just had to hope that he wouldn’t find you.

“Knock knock

I am at your door now

I am coming in

No need to ask for permission”

Several minutes went by with no unusual sounds. Ever so slowly, your tensed body began to relax little by little. Zack might never be able to find you here. If that’s the case, you could finally work on finding a way to escape this hell-

Slow footsteps were heard outside. You froze, so terrified that you even forgot to breathe for a moment. You anxiously waited and hoped that he would walk right past the building and not even bother searching, but you knew better than to expect that.

Tears sprung to your eyes as the front door slowly creaked open. He had found you.

“Knock knock

I’m inside your room now

Where is it you’ve hid?

Our game of hide and seek’s about to end”

I know you’re in here,” he laughed. “There’s no point in hiding anymore.”

You stayed rooted to the spot, too afraid to do anything. No matter what you did, there would never be a good outcome for you. It was an endless loop of fear and suffering.

“Huh? Not coming out? I guess you want to keep playing this game as much as I do.”

Oh, how he couldn’t be any more wrong.

“I’m coming closer

Looking underneath your bed but

You’re not there, I wonder

Could you be inside the closet?”

You gasped softly when the floor creaked as he walked inside the room. Zack didn’t even bother to stop and think about other possible hiding spots as he got down on his hands and knees beside the bed. With powerful force, he flung over the bedsheets to reveal what laid under the bed, ready to drag you out from under there and relish in your screams of terror.

Instead, what he found was nothing but dusty carpeting. There were no traces that you had ever been under there.

“Huh?” he muttered to himself. He was positive that the bed could’ve been your only hiding spot, yet somehow you weren’t there.

Standing back up, he muttered something under his breath that was incoherent to you, though you weren’t paying much attention to what he said. You were more focused on listening to his footsteps.

Zack was almost ready to leave the building and search for you elsewhere until his eyes landed on the closet in the far back of the room. He smirked, knowing exactly where you were.

Laughing once more, he darted towards the closet with such speed that you didn’t even get the chance to process what was happening. A scream tore through your throat the second the closet door was flung open, revealing the devil himself.

“Ding dong

I have found you

Ding dong

You were hiding here

Now you’re it

Ding dong

Looks like I have won

Now you’re it”

Grabbing you by the collar of your dirty shirt, he pulled you out with great ease. His strength was immense; being able to hold you up with just one arm. Your hands wrapped around his in a desperate attempt to pry his fingers off you, but it was futile. Your strength was nothing compared to his.

“L-let me go!” you screamed.

“You made this way too easy to find you,” he told you, though you were surprised by how angry he sounded. “How can I have any fun when I know where you are the whole time? It takes the joy out of hunting my prey.”

Was that really the true reason why you’d been running all this time; for all those weeks? You weren’t running for your life, no; you were running for his amusement. He never planned on killing you because he had something far better in mind. No matter how fast or how far you ran, you could never escape him. There was only one option left.

“I haven’t even broken a damn sweat yet!” he continued on before grabbing you by the nape of your neck and pushing you forward. “I’ll give you until the count of ten this time so you better not disappoint me again.”

Only one option left. Only one option left. Now’s your chance to escape, take it now!

Ignoring what he said, you slowly turned around to face Zack. He seemed surprised by this; surprised enough to forget for a moment that you disobeyed him.

“The hell’s your problem? Don’t forget you’re mine.”

There was no going back now. This would be your only chance to escape. Looking up at him, you did the last thing he ever expected you to: you smiled.

“I’m sorry, Zack,” you said, straining to keep your voice from cracking. “I’m so happy to keep playing this game with you.”

He stared at you for a few seconds in shock, completely unable to understand what exactly was happening. For a moment, you feared that your plan had failed and he wasn’t going to go through with it, after all. As soon as you were ready to accept defeat and start running, he began to laugh as he raised his scythe up high.

Your smile wavered, unsure if this was truly going to play but he quickly stopped you.

“No! Don’t stop smiling!” he roared, a crazed look clearly present on his face. “I love seeing you so happy; it makes me want to kill.”

He didn’t even give you a chance to rethink what you had done. In one quick motion, his blade sliced into your flesh; staining itself with the blood of yet another victim. That smile of yours never left your face, not even when you fell to the floor.

The ecstasy he felt from the kill was short-lived. The moment reality crashed back down upon him and made him aware of what he just did, all the joy he felt completely vanished.

“Huh…? Shit! Dammit, no!”

Every single profanity he knew left his mouth, albeit none of which made him feel any better about what he just did. Like usual, he got too carried away.

“Dammit, [name], get up!” he screamed, yet you continued to lie there in a puddle of your own blood. “I’m not fucking around, get up!”

He could order you around all he liked, but it wouldn’t change a thing.

You were dead. He killed you.

“Ding dong

Pay the consequence”

By his own hands, Zack forever lost his favorite toy.
