Someone asked what a full hourglass figure should wear to work: "I’m an hourglass figure, and a size 12 - 14.  Fit, but a bigger woman.  A lot of clothes look a little more sexy for work than I would like them too - just b/c of my curves.  (Think Joan Holloway on Madmen).  Can you advise? I don’t think women should have to look like men, but I feel more comfortable if I can manage to look tailored - but it’s difficult.  Ideas?"

Four pieces of advice:

  1. A pencil skirt is lovely on an hourglass. Don't be afraid to buy a bigger size than you like - fit it to the widest part of your fabulous body and get the waist taken in to accommodate your smaller waist. Accentuate curves with a belted sweater or jacket.
  2. The wrap dress is perfect for the hourglass. Feel free to put a camisole underneath and put a sweater over top that skims your curves.
  3. You may never be able to buy a standard suit - buy separates. Let the pants hang from hip to ankle for a lean look.
  4. Something to be said for camouflage - not the green pattern but the design. The dress on the right is a great example of accentuating the middle and minimizing the sides with the dark shade.

And remember: The Joan Holloways of the world looked amazing because they wore girdles. We don't wear girdles anymore: We have Spanx, gosh darn it!
