Fat shaming is a ridiculous social construct based on ignorance.
My grandmother told me this story a couple of weeks ago.
She grew up in Croatia, on the island of Korcula, during the era of the Depression and WWII. Food was scarce on the island as it was. To the point that my great-great-grandparents died of starvation. The Nazis occupied the island during WWII, and would claim what they wanted of the little food there was.
My grandmother was looking at a magazine that my aunty had bought. All of the cover stories were things like "Loose 10kgs in 2 weeks!" and "Shocking weight loss by (insert celebrity name here)" and "Look at how horrible these people look because they're fat".
My grandmother threw the magazine in the bin. She said that this "need to be skinny is stupid". She grew up in a time and place where there was barely enough food for people to get by, and she said that there were still fat people, even then. And it wasn't about how much they ate, but how their bodies are made.
A woman of nearly 80, who has no education above high school can see this. Why is it so hard for people now with access to high education, and every bit of information they would need on the internet?
