@strozzaprete so how bad is the situation in italy? my best friend lived there when she was younger and speaks italian and we have this dream of buying a little house in the hills somewhere in Piedmont, but I can’t quite figure out how I feel about the misogyny situation there. every once in a while i read some shit and im just like 😶 what is this, 1974, not to even touch upon the whole Amanda Knox thing, so i’m trying to get some sense of what living there might actually be like from a lesbian/radfem perspective. which is not to single italy out, i mean my own home country is plenty misogynistic and behind the times, but i can’t quite figure out what i’m dealing with in italy.
the smaller the town the more bigoted the people are, but even in major cities like rome and milan men are insanely misogynistic and feel justified for harassing women and girls. the media and even politicians are always excusing male rapists and killers of women and victim-blaming us and the public outrage about it is there, but those same people remain in power anyways... even if it wasn't just about women we have people within the camera and the senate who have literally done fascism apologia and literally nothing happened they keep working and making statements on tv as usual. also idk if you've heard of giulia cecchettin but her sister was literally condemned by popular media outposts as a satanist because she said she wanted women to "burn everything" in giulia's honor and she was wearing eyeliner and some bring me the horizon hoodie or some shit. imagine
i rarely listen to the news lately because they keep killing and raping women (the last one i heard of was pregnant and killed by her husband?) and it's depressing to hear the presenters announce the death of a woman right before and in the same tone as when they warn people not to eat too much pandoro during christmas. it's also depressing to know that so many of my male peers act like they care about women to get pussy and then they go on threads to make memes and edits about victims of femicide (yes this is a real problem that is happening lately) and/or terrorize their girlfriends with excessive jealousy and control over what they wear and where they go and who they talk to. i can't really say about how living as a lesbian in italy would be like because i'm bisexual, but i've been harassed before when i was openly dating a woman and all of my lesbian friends have faced some form of lesbophobia in their lives for just existing, ranging from bad looks (which are scary because here sometimes it means you're gonna get followed home and beaten) to actually getting beaten by a gang. that's also depending on the souther you go and the smaller the city, but remember italy is the catholic country per antonomasia.
plus the inflation is crazy, we have no minimum wage (i used to get paid 3€ per hour), every house has either mold or too much limestone in the water tubes or both, nobody minds their own business, the food is only really good if you know where to go, people will yell on the street under your window and will never shut the fuck up and everybody's angry all the time
