Damien Cuypers LFW illustrations as part of his collaboration with the British Fashion Council.
‘I’m a French illustrator with a rather nomadic lifestyle and a cabin fetish.’
I absolutely love Cuypers use of crayon/pencil as it really expresses a movement and spontaneous energy when creating the work which is reflective of the garments and models themselves! I am going to try and use more of this media in my work especially focussing on colour and mixing up block colour with outlines and a use of negative space. I think these aspects work really well for fashion illustration as it keeps the focus on key aspects and adds a dramatic effect with the negative spaces vs the bold colours and shapes of the garments. He pairs this with carefully chosen details; something I really need to think about in my work… what to keep in and what to keep out!
Also the media he uses is really great for this type of work for quick briefs like LFW when it is essential the work is produced quickly to stay as relavant as possible! Also crayons/pencil is great for working on the spot as a skilled artist like Cuypers can quickly capture the moment, the blasts of colour and flow of movement exuding from the models, the garments, the shows and the other characters helping to create the atmosphere.
I like that he captures other elements of LFW, not just the specific models and garments on the catwalk itself, but for example an elderly stylish couple sat down together, it really creates charming illustrations that totally capture the atmosphere of the week! The visitors/guests themselves are a work of art and throw themselves into the creativity of the week.
