©11/10/15 Today’s SunD.I.Y (hehe) is a painted found object from the streets of Leeds, this recycled gas canister has been turned into a cute pink penguin💅🐧🌟
I wanted to use a found item from around Leeds and I thought this item would be appropriate seeing as I live in one of the biggest student areas in the UK and there are canisters like these everywhere so I thought recycling it into something cute and pretty would be a good challenge.
I started off by painting it white with acrylic paint, then I added some light pink tones, gradually getting more saturated towards the bottom of the piece. I then added the shadows of the penguin in the most saturated pink acrylic paint, and went on to add highlights in lighter pink and white.
This SunDIY went so much better than last weeks and I think this was all due to preparation and setting myself a doable challenge; I only have about an hour or so, so it was great that the size and scale of this piece was so small. This also appealed to a key part of my art practice: detail! I just love challenging myself to be precise and controlled with tiny little details and I was really happy with how the little penguin turned out in the end!
I decided to do a cute pink penguin to go for the most juxtaposed aesthetic from the function of the ‘cool and edgy’ canister. My flatmate loves penguins so I thought it would be something she could find a place/use for!
