Nicholas II, the last Tsar to rule Russia prior to the 1917 Revolution, is a burdened man. Revolution is near. Tsarevich Alexei suffering from hemophilia has become bedridden to complications. Nicholas’s wife, the German-born Alexandra, is at her wit’s end and decides to call upon the assistance of Rasputin. His arrival brings both hope and despair. While he briefly restores the vitality of the young prince, he also sets off a number of scandals.
Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny won a Golden Globe for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for TV. Alan Rickman, starring as Rasputin, won an Emmy (along with Greta Scacchi playing Tsarina Alexandra) and a Golden Globe for his work in this movie. Ian McKellen, playing Tsar Nicholas II, won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, and was nominated an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor.
