Thankful for our Staff!

We are thankful this week for our excellent staff. Caroline Allen [right] and Carla DeWit [left] are first year Library Science students, are finishing their first semesters as employees of the IWA.

Caroline Allen is an archives and public libraries cross over. She has no idea where she’ll stick in libraries, but she hopes it’s somewhere fun. Since beginning work in the archives in September, Caroline has focused on cleaning up existing collections and processing new ones. When she’s not at work or in class, Caroline enjoys running Iowa trails, reading novels and comic books alike, and knitting cozy hats.

Carla DeWit joined the Iowa Women’s Archives this semester as a student specialist. She is in her first semester of the BLIS program at Iowa, which is a degree in Library and Information Science and a certificate in Book Arts through the Center for the Book. What this means is that in three to five years, you might find her running a French Fold pamphlet demo in a public library, explaining the basics of grain direction and five-hole sewing in addition to (hopefully) cataloging and coding. Before coming to Iowa City, Carla graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, and worked in her hometown of Bettendorf, Iowa, where she was an avid user of their public library. This semester at IWA, she’s learned to process small collections and successfully navigate the Aspace system, while discovering the wealth of amazing women and information hidden in the archives. She’s excited to polish her skills, master new ones, and continue this journey of discovery. Hobbies include reading, writing, crocheting, cuddling with cats, working out, and Netflix binges.
